Even as Apple continues to iron out the kinks in Leopard, rumors are flying that the next version of Mac OS X might be revealed as early as next week, although it may be more of a "security and stability" release than anything else. According to the Unofficial Apple Weblog, Apple might seed an "early build" of Mac OS X 10.6 (there's no snappy nickname quite yet) to developers at next week's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
Word has it that the new OS could be ready to ship by January 2009 (in time for Macworld), and that it would be the first Intel-only version of OS X—sorry, PowerPC users.
And finally, TUAW's spies say that OS X 10.6 would come with little in the way of earth-shattering features; rather, the update would be all about "stability and security."
It's not clear from the rumors whether Steve Jobs would trumpet the purported update during Monday's keynote, or if the first batches of code will simply be released to developers. My guess is the latter, given that Jobs will probably have his hands full (presumably, at least) with the new 3G iPhone, but hey—you never know.
As usual, Apple hasn't commented on the rumors—and it does seem a little soon for Apple to be coming out with a new version of Mac OS X, especially considering the 22-month gap between 10.4 "Tiger" and 10.5 "Leopard."
Of course, if 10.6 is just a maintenance release, the timing starts to sound a little more plausible. Then again, how will Apple convince Macheads—myself included—to shell out $100-plus for a "security and stability" update? That would definitely put the reality distortion field to the test.
Anyway, we'll be getting the answer soon enough, so stay tuned. Update: Ars Technica has more details, along with 10.6's purported code name: "Snow Leopard." Interesting. Related: Rumor: Mac OS X 10.6 to debut at WWDC 08? [TUAW] |

Moving your files from a PC to a Mac? You may find that the job isn't quite so simple, because Macs, out of the box, can't read drives formatted with the NTFS file system, which is the standard for Windows. How do you solve the dilemma of getting hundreds of gigs of data from your Windows PC to your Mac?
While a variety of solutions are possible, the best I've found is to use a simple piece of software called MacFuse. MacFuse is a small and very simple piece of software that lets Macs read NTFS drives (and, in fact, drives formatted with a variety of file systems). To get it, just drop by the web page linked above, and download the appropriate version for your Mac (10.5 if you have Leopard, 10.4 if you have Tiger). Install the dmg package like you would any software and reboot (optionally). You're done. Grab that hard drive or any Windows formatted thumbdrive and plug it in. The drive will appear normally on the desktop and can be read or written to as you would any Mac drive. There's no need to launch anything special in order to read the drive. MacFuse is automatic.
One caveat: Writing files to an NTFS drive on a Mac using MacFuse is slow (see the FAQ), so unless you really need to have a drive that both types of computer can access, consider reformatting the drive on your Mac after you've grabbed everything you need from your PC and copied it over. This week I decided to do an investigation, see how long I could last without using Google. I found myself turning to 'Yahoo' and 'Ask'. But all these searches just didn't do the job, like google does. I found myself also not getting the results I needed. Yes, Yahoo got more results.. But they were not accurate at all. Live search, what a story. I tried 5, maybe 6 searches. And I didn't get anything that I wanted. You search PiczoTube in Live Search, and the top result is a forum post! And, I lasted another day. But then I couldn't stand it! Why is the only Decent search engin 'Google'? Why? Is it the amount of advertisers? Is it.. How the search finds the websites? Is it because the other searches dropped META search results? I think the answer may never be found. Google is way to poweful now to ever fall and for us to ever drop it as something in our lives. However, with Microsoft and Google. Maybe Google could fall more with Microsoft controling so many PC's and then if they control search too. We just cannot predict or say. I'll write up more on this. I guess we cannot do 'Google Slimming' right now. Give it a try, and see how long you can last. |
